In a nuclear accident, radioactive substances can be released that spread through the air. One of these substances is radioactive iodine. Radioactive iodine can enter the body through inhalation and be absorbed by the thyroid gland. In the long term, this can cause thyroid cancer in young people.

The chance of a nuclear accident or a nuclear attack happening is small. But if it does happen, it is important to have the iodine tablets immediately at hand. That saves valuable time.

By taking iodine tablets at the right time, the thyroid gland becomes saturated with stable iodine (harmless iodine). The thyroid gland then absorbs less radioactive iodine, which reduces the chance of developing thyroid cancer.

Anyone living more than 100 kilometres from a nuclear power plant or a nuclear attack does not need to have or take iodine tablets when radiation is released. Unless they are closer than 100 kilometres from the site at the time of a nuclear accident or attack.

Important: Make sure the tablets contain potassium iodide. This is the active ingredient in iodine tablets.
